Never sold in the U.S., but this was taken near VW USA HQ. They had one here for a while for “show and display” purposes only. I worked for VW at the time and actually drove it around the company lot. No power steering, and it sounded like there was a lawn mower running directly behind my head. Still, it was a neat experience.

I’m trying to remember if I drove it shoeless or not. I think I did, and I’m sure no one cared.

I think everyone has a friend who is successful but modest. I think if a car had to embody those qualities, it’d be the Phaeton. Looks like a regular VW to most people but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

but seriously they let you work barefoot?
I think I would be sent home if I arrive to work barefoot. We have a section in our employee manual about dress code and a point about acceptable foot wear. Guessing most employers have similar standards

That was in December, I believe, so there wasn’t a lot of competition. I don’t think we even filled half of one lot.

I certainly never just strolled into work without shoes...not at this job anyway. I think HR would have had a hissy fit. But I do often ditch the stupid shoes for certain things, like driving.
Now when I worked at a small-town newspaper office with just four other people? Nobody gave a crap one way or the other. But I also wasn’t making any money.

Confession 1: have seen your Phaeton, not realized it was yours and said to myself:
“Well I already know it’s a Phaeton.”
Confession 2: I also had VW PR person yell at me on the floor of the 2003 NAIAS for calling the Phaeton “an $80,000 Golf.”
Anyways props for rolling in one, I like them a lot now that they are Golf money, but I don’t think I’d sleep at night thinking about potential repair bills.

Hello. I was told you are a Galant expert. I’m curious in ascertaining your opinion on a particular ‘89 specimen.
